Science Vs. Religion --Draft 1

Science vs. Religion
By: Tessa Fry
Science and religion are both about belief, just belief in different things. Science has hard, sufficient proof to back up its reasons and beliefs, making it easier to believe in.

Science is the belief in facts and the acceptance of reason. Science shows its believers every day why they can, and do believe in science. Religion on the other hand is about believing in the unknown. I personally believe in both science and religion, however, science by far, is the easiest thing for me to believe in.

Science has shown us that its theories are correct. When I would go to church, the preacher would tell me that God created everything in his image and that everything is exactly how He created it. However, when my science teacher told me about Darwin’s Theory of Evolution, it had proof to back it up. My teacher showed me pictures and articles about how a dinosaur that once had scales then had feathers years later. These, and other findings, could prove to me that Darwin’s Theory was correct and that evolution really does exist.

When the preacher told me that God has created everything exactly how he wanted to, my mind went instantly to our everyday diseases. If God wants his people to suffer from diseases like cancer, HIV/AIDS, H1N1, Alzheimer’s, osteoporosis, dementia, Parkinson’s, ect., then do we really want God to be the one we believe in. Science has medicine that can prevent, cure, and even hold off many of these diseases. Heart disease has also been scientifically proven to be passed down genetically from family member to family member; does God really want this? I find it harder to believe that our God has given us these diseases that cause so much pain and suffering, than the fact that science can treat and cure many of these diseases that God has created.

If religion is true, then the reason we have psychopaths is because the Devil has come up from Hell and corrupted the mind of those people. Science has another explanation. Studies have been conducted on psychopathic killers and other everyday individuals to find out why they do the things that they do.  “The definition of a psychopath is: someone who is born without the gene that creates “conscience,” and “compassion”. A fact about psychopaths is that one in every 25 people born into this world will be born psychopaths. Some examples of psychopaths are: Tony Blair, The Queen and the Royal Family, The Bushes, The Rothschilds and Rockefellers, Angela Kerkel (German Chancellor), and The Media Mogul Rupert Murdoch are all psychopaths by definition.”[1] This is a statement of fact that has been proven over and over again in the scientific community. On the other hand, no one can actually prove that there is a Devil and a Hell, or even if there is a God and a Heaven.

Another very controversial topic is of science trying to discover whether biblical stories are truth or fiction. One of the more popular stories in the Bible is the story of Noah and his arc. The story goes that God told Noah to build an enormous wooden boat and bring onboard, one male and one female of every animal species. Then God made it rain for forty days and forty nights, flooding the entire earth with water, swallowing up all the wicked in the world. Scientists have discovered however, that this story could possible be entirely false. “Calling it the “Noah’s Flood Hypothesis,” the geologist theorized that water form melting ice caps overwhelmed the Mediterranean Sea, breaking through the Bosporus Strait to the Black Se with Herculean force and flooding more that 60, 000 square miles (96, 560 kilometres) of land. In 2007, other researchers found evidence that a melting ice cap form Greenland boosted global sea levels 4.5 feet (1.4 meters) between 8740 B.C. and 8160 B.C., causing people to migrate toward Europe to escape flooding in the same region.”[2] This theory is not so unbelievable. Even in today’s world we have flooding that happens in numerous areas over the world, sometimes with disastrous results.  We have also seen proof about ice caps melting. For example, here in Canada we have the Columbian Ice Fields “located on the boundary of Banff and Jasper National Parks. One of the larges accumulations of ice and snow south of the Arctic Circle, it covers an area of nearly 325 square kilometres, sometimes reaching a depth of 300-360 meters.“[3] “The glacier is shrinking by 30 percent every 100 years. At this rate it will be gone in 300 years.”[4] This shows us that it is not entirely impossible that the water form melting ice caps could have overwhelmed the Mediterranean Sea.

Overall science and religion are both about belief, just belief in different things. Science is the belief in facts and the acceptance of reason. Religion on the other hand is about believing in the unknown. Science has hard, sufficient proof to back up its reasons and beliefs, making it easier to believe in. As were religion is based on a book and a belief in something they do not know is true. I believe in both these things, however science really is easier to believe in and I like to be able to believe in the truth.

Teddy Wosevelt -Final Draft

Teddy Wosevelt

Hi! My name is Robert Fry, but you can call me Bob. I’m going to tell you a story about my summer vacation last year when I found my very best friend in the world.
It was a hot July afternoon, I was ten years old and all of my friends had ditched me to go and see all of their relatives. I was bored. With all of my friends gone, I only had my dad (ugg), my mom (ugger), and my sister Cathy (uggest!) to play and hang out with.
Well, I really didn’t like the idea of hanging out with my sister, (again uggest!) so I decided to go for a walk and find some unsuspecting victim, I mean friend, to hang out with. I was walking down Hudson Bay St. in Kamsack thinking about all the things I would make him; I mean things we would do together. We would jump off the railroad bridge into the river, go fishing at the lake, we would go get ice cream, play ball, go roller skating, and most of all, torment my sister Cathy (*evil laugh*)!
Anyways, as I was saying, I needed a friend to help me pass the time and someone who wouldn’t object to all of my mischievous plans. I was looking and looking; trying to look into every window of every house, to try and see every living thing that could become my new friend. Well, I was looking so hard that I almost didn’t see that I had narrowly missed stepping on my soon to be, new best friend.
He was short; okay, well, short may be a little bit of an understatement. He was thin; again, an understatement. He was also very fashionable. What I mean is that he was dressed in the COOLEST! colour combination I have ever seen. He was wearing all green, but he had a white pin stripe running the course of his back and the belly of his ensemble was entirely yellow.
Now, you are probably thinking to yourself that I am a crazy ten year old that doesn’t have a clue on what fashionable even is. Well, normally you would be right, however, this time I knew in my gut that this new friend was both stylish, and cool. I think it was the way that he wore his colours over his slender body, or maybe it really was that I just thought he looked cool, but whatever the circumstances, I knew I was right about this new friend of mine.
Who was my amazing new friend? Well I will give you a couple of hints. Hint #1 His smile isn’t very welcoming, Hint #2 He loves mice, and finally Hint #3 He is very flexible. Did you figure it out yet? No? Okay then I will tell you. My new best friend in the entire world is Teddy Wosevelt, the Garder Snake!
I hope that didn’t surprise you too much, but yes, my friend was a snake and he was the greatest! He did everything with me!
First we would go to the park and I pushed him on the swing and watch as he did a flying dismount! He did seven flips in the air before sticking the landing! I’m telling you Teddy was an amazing athlete. I mean he even knew how to play catch; well in his own way, but still! All that he had to do is wrap around the ball and I would throw it; he was very good at that game.
We also went roller skating; I mean roller surfing. You see, because snakes don’t have feet, let alone legs, the only way that Teddy could roller skate was if I stuck him in the boot a let him roll down a hill. He really liked that activity! Teddy would hang his head back and let the wind rush past his face, enjoying every second of it!
There were tonnes of other things that we did together to. We played board games together, we went swimming together, we went on bike rides, fishing trips, and got ice cream together, and he even shared my bed with me at night. I thought about asking my mom to make him some pyjamas, but I don’t think she would have gone for that idea.
All and all, Teddy and I were the best of friends, we spent that whole summer together, I even introduced him to some of my friends that came back from visiting their families. The friendship between Teddy and I was great! Together, we felt like we could do anything! Until that one day that Teddy went outside to play.
It was beautiful out! The sun was beating down on our small town and I was busy helping my dad with odd jobs around the house. Teddy was lying idly in my bedroom waiting for me to be ready to go out and play, however, I was way too busy to play with him.
I decided that there was no reason that he couldn’t go out and play by himself while I was busy inside, so I went downstairs and picked him up off of my bed. I told him that he was to be careful and not to get squished by any cars while he was outside; and with that final word I said goodbye and went back inside.
Now I don’t know exactly how long Teddy actually played outside, but I don’t think it was very long. I had been busy all day, and after dinner I went outside to find Teddy and bring him in to watch some T.V. with me. I walked out into the front yard and I couldn’t find him. He wasn’t in the bushes; his favourite hiding spot in hind n’ go seek. He wasn’t in the tree that we loved to climb, and he wasn’t laying on his favourite rock.
I turned around to face the yards across the street and just as I did, I saw him. Teddy had done exactly what I had told him not to do! He had gone to play in the street and had gotten himself run over! He laid there in the middle of the street, squished flat and completely dead! I was both sad that I had lost my new best friend and mad that he had done what I had told him not to do!
But no matter how mad I was at my best friend Teddy, I decided that I needed to give him a proper burial. I walked out to the middle of the road and picked Teddy up. He was stiff as a board but his colours where still brilliantly visible. I walked Teddy down Hudson Bay St., remembering all of the fun things we had done together over that summer. I got to the end of the road, and looked out at the bush where Teddy and I had first met. I will admit that I almost cried; you would too if your best friend just died!
I took one last look at my friend Teddy Wosevelt and decided that there was only one way that he would want to be buried. So I said goodbye to my friend and then held him by the tail and threw him into the bush, boomerang styleJ! It really was the only way that I could see Teddy wanting to go.
So that is the story about me and Teddy Wosevelt. He was my best friend and we made some great memories together. But most of all, he showed me that I didn’t need to have my school buddies with me during that summer to have fun. All I needed was a Garder Snake that had the courage of a lion, and the heart of a best friend.

Tall Tail Pre-Writting

My dad lived in Kamsack when he was little.
He found a gardner snake and desided to keep him as a pet.
He named him Teddy Wosevelt.
He took him on walks, ate ice cream with him, let him sleep with him, went rollar blading together, played ball, played hide-n-go seek together, etc.
One day dad let Teddy outside while he had lunch.
3 hours later after he had eaten lunch, done the dishes, and homework, he went out to find Teddy.
Dad found Teddy ran over by a car, flat in the middle of the street.
He picked Teddy up, walked him to the bushes at the end on the street, and threw him like a boomerang into the bushes.
R.I.P Teddy Wosevelt.

The End.

Reading Log #7

Reason or faith?

Both reason and faith have good things about them. Reason gives us a solid answer and faith gives us hope. I do not believe that one truely is better than the other. People need faith to keep them going through life; whether that faith is in God, their friends or family, or maybe even in the stock market they still need faith. However there is such a thing has having to much faith and not enough reason. For example, if you had faith that God would save you from bad things and you desided to walk down the middle of the road, at night, wearing all black, you lack reason. Reason tells you that you should not be doing what you are doing and tells you what you need to do that is right.

Both reason and faith are equally important, but without a balance of both we cannot live our lives, happily, and rationally.
